Baroque Composers

Antonio Lotti (1667-1740)

Antonio Lotti was an Italian composer during the late Baroque and early Classical periods.  He held the position of Maestro di Cappella (Master of the Chapel) at St. Mark’s Cathedral in Venice.  This was one of the highest positions a composer could have during this period. Some of Lotti’s predecessors were Andrea Gabrieli and Claudio Monteverdi.  Lotti wrote both secular and sacred music, but is best known for the latter. He wrote many oratorios, masses, motets and psalms; and most were in the style of a cappella voices due to their elegance and skillful counterpoint.
